caring for porcelain

Most porcelain manufacturers agree that their products are created to be used -- even every day! With proper care and storage, your china should bring you years of dining pleasure.

We recommend these simple care instructions:

  • Leave the abrasive powders, liquid detergents, and steel wool scrubbing pads for your pots and pans. Mild detergents and gentle cleansers are best.
  • For sink washings, line the basin bottom with a cushiony towel or rubber mat, and use a soft sponge or cloth on the china.
  • Although hand-washing is preferred, you can use the dishwasher ... but choose a regular or gentle cycle (the "pots & pans" cycle is not recommended).
  • To avoid chipping or cracks, load the dishwasher so that the china doesn't knock or bump other pieces of dinnerware, which could cause chips and cracks, and make sure the china is adequately cooled before unloading it from the dishwasher.
  • Remember, most breakage and damage is done during the loading or unloading of the dishwasher so take extra time to load and unload the pieces carefully.
  • Oversized pieces should be hand washed to prevent chipping.
  • If stacking is necessary when storing your china, use felt, napkins or even coffee filters to separate each dish to keep the foot of each plate from abrading the plate under it.

A Note About Dishwashers ...

Most fine china patterns may be placed in the dishwasher. But please remember, porcelain is exposed to many different influences in the dishwasher. The composition of the detergent, the temperature of the machine, the degree of the water, and the method of drying, all affect the durability and wear of items when exposed to repeated washing with a dishwasher. Unfortunately, older dishwashers don’t protect articles as well as the newer models so it’s important to follow the guidelines issued by the dishwasher manufacturer e.g. regularly refill the salt storage container and follow the detergent dosage recommendations. Dishwashers that don’t automatically disperse heat should be opened immediately after the rinsing cycle is finished to protect the ware.

Please note: Although most patterns can be safely placed in the dishwasher, there are many that can not. Always check each pattern’s specifications before washing.
